PROGRAM NOTE
Bitcoin - is it the currency of the future? Or is it like “trading terds” as Warren Buffet said? Is there any true value in a bitcoin or is investing in cryptocurrency simply a glorified Ponzi scheme? I joined the debate by investing a small sum of my money in October of 2020, primarily as a form of entertainment during the quarantine of coronavirus. It was fun to watch my Robinhood account “earn money” with me doing nothing but sit there on my couch. Speculating in bitcoin has been a thrill - buying and selling 24 hours a day, making $5 here and losing hundreds of dollars there as the price jumps around unpredictably.
I wanted to make this piece a reflection on my choice to “invest” (or should I say gamble?) in bitcoin. The FOMO (fear of missing out) was intense for me as I saw the price continue to go up and up. People were making millions! But I also knew the risk was great of losing all my principle investment. Hence, this piece is a wild ride of fun and greed mixed with fear and frustration. The primary melody is set in a 15/8 meter influenced by jazz funk combined with EDM trap. In the audio track I included sounds from everything I could think of associated with a bull run and making money; coins spinning and clanking, cash registers, heartbeat thumping, bulls snorting and pawing, slot machines, etc. Will my investment skyrocket or crash and burn? Only time will tell. For now, I’m enjoying the ride of the ups and downs and writing music I love!
A HUGE thank you to all of the consortium members who supported this project! What a pleasure it has been for me to interact with you all. And to Gail Robertson for bravely leading the organization of the project and consortium.
