Program Note - The story behind the music
If someone asked you to describe Kirk Taylor in one word, it would be “energetic.” When I was asking family and friends about Kirk's personality and interests, Ryan Hudec said, “Kirk is into everything. He loves to learn and loves to teach. He is always going a mile a minute.” That really resonated with me and I think the phrase “mile a minute” perfectly captures the essence of Kirk's personality. In addition to sharing the same last name (though no relation), Kirk and I both love to keep active. This work is in the style of a moto perpetuo, which means perpetual motion. The piece is always moving forward propelled by a constant stream of eighth notes. This composition serves as a tribute to Kirk Taylor who has touched thousands of lives over the past thirty years as a band director at Rocky River High School. This work was commissioned by family and friends of Kirk as a gift to commemorate his retirement.
