Silounds- Percussion and Interactive Electroacoustics
Duration
6-10 minutes
Instrumentation
small concert bass drum, suspended cymbal, Max/MSP
Program Note
David Cope coined the term "silounds" to mean all of the very quiet sounds that are only heard when we are trying to be silent. This composition focuses on many "normally unheard" delicate sounds made by percussion instruments.
Performance Note
This piece is designed to be a freely improvised solo. The score reflects the general shape of the piece and dictates when the pedal should be triggered by the performer. The actual amount of time between pedals is open to the interpretation of the performer; however, an effort should be made to keep the general proportions of length of time as indicated on the score.

Thoughts about "Silounds"
-The concept of interaction. Is it really possible for the performer to respond to the computer and the computer to respond to the performer? No, (or at least not without creating artificial intelligence) BUT the computer can be controlled by the performer, and do random things to which the performer may respond.
-Why not write out the piece exactly? Why improvisation? To heighten interaction and musical expression.
-Limiting sound sources.
-Incorporating electronics. Why? Gives performer a stimulus, makes his/her improvisation more expressive.

A few issues encountered:
-recording delicate and LOUD percussion w/o adjusting volume input
-recording using sfrecord~
